If you have ever read Daniel Pink’s book A Whole New Mind, you know that we are preparing our students for a work environment that will be markedly different from what we experience today—in fact 90% of the jobs our current first grade class will apply to don’t even exist yet. For schools this is an alarming fact and one that challenges us to think that teaching reading, writing, and math, while critically important, is not enough. In order to truly succeed in the years ahead we must prepare our students to be creative, take initiatives, set goals, work collaboratively, respect differences and know how to problem solve. These skills do not come naturally, rather they must be explicitly taught. St. Stanislaus Kostka School is excited to announce that we will be the first Chicago elementary school—public or private—to implement The Leader in Me program into the school curriculum this fall. The Leader in Me is based on Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective people and will teach our students invaluable life skills.
